Anaplastic carcinomas give rise to a history of recent, very rapid enlargement of a normal or goitrous thyroid gland, with local pressure symptoms, particularly that of difficulty in breathing. On examination, the thyroid is markedly and asymmetrically enlarged by a large hard mass that is attached to adjacent structures. Vocal cord paralysis may also be present.
